One of the leading scholars of Italian Renaissance art, Rona Goffen has published numerous essays on Venetian painting, with particular emphasis on images of women from the Virgin Mary to the goddess Venus. The twenty papers published here include several which have previously appeared only in Italian, now translated into English by Professor Goffen.

The essays deal with a broad range of subjects including Paolo da Venezia’s altarpiece for San Marco, Giovanni Bellini’s religious and secular works, portraits by such masters as Carpaccio and Lotto, and Madonna paintings and nudes by Titian. The volume includes an introductory essay and a comprehensive index.
