G. de Jerphanion’s pioneering work, long out of print, remains fundamental not only for our knowledge of the monuments of Cappadocia, but also for the study of Byzantine monumental painting.
In view of its continuing importance for scholarship, the work has now been reissued in the form of a revised edition, under the direction of Professor Catherine Jolivet-Lévy. This represents a major achievement in itself, the fruit of many years’ work on the region and its monuments. All of Jerphanion’s descriptions have been systematically checked. For each monument, a short note follows the text of Jerphanion, correcting where appropriate and adding additional material, along with the subsequent bibliography. Often only minor rectifications are involved, but in certain cases, as for the churches of the region of Mavrucan (Güzelöz) and Basköy, the descriptions have been completely revised, since so much of Jerphanion’s information there was incomplete, and even erroneous.
Since Jerphanion’s day, the documentation on the monuments has grown considerably, due to the discovery of new churches. This has been integrated into the text in the form of bibliographical notes where the churches have been published, and brief descriptions of the monuments when they are still unpublished.
This revised edition of Jerphanion’s
classic study will finally make available a much-needed standard work of reference
for the study of the Byzantine monuments of Cappadocia. It includes many new
plans and photographs. Jerphanion's original photographs in the Centre Gabriel
Millet at the École pratique des hautes études have been used
in the plates volumes to ensure the highest quality.
